Make your goals real!

18/01/2011

Now Christmas is out of the way a lot of people start to get stuck into the goals they set as New Year resolutions. Giving up smoking, getting fit, losing weight are the popular ones.

The gyms that were quiet leading up to Christmas are now chocker block with people on a mission!

After a short space of time, the enthusiasm and motivation starts to dwindle and New Year resolutions are broken. Why is this? The chances are the goals are based on what a person thinks they must do rather than what they really want to do.

Use TGROW (Theme, Goals, Reality, Options and Will/When) method to buck the trend. For example, starting with theme, a New Year resolution may be getting fit, the Goal is what? (Running a marathon, walking to the end of the road? Make the goal real, fast forward and live it, if your not excited it’s not a goal. Next, the reality, where are you against this goal? Identify the gap. Next, list all your options - getting fit does not have to be gym or running! List as many as you can. Choose from the options and identify small achievable steps that can be achieved in a week and on a regular basis. Then commit to a date (the when) and just do it!

Do the same for business related goals and leadership development aspirations!
